A Brief History of the Gonzales Art Group

The first known meeting of the Gonzales Art Group was held in the Gonzales Municipal Building on September 15, 1966.  The first president of the Gonzales Art Group was Mrs. Evelyn Stella.

Mrs. Oscar Buchholtz drew the honor of being the "first artist to exhibit a picture in the First National Bank."  This was the start to the Artist of the Month.

In 1966, the first Art Show was held on the front and back porches of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilson.  This home was also the old Gonzales College, which remains one of the outstanding structures in Gonzales.  Since 1967, the Gonzales Art Group has also sponsored an art show in conjuction with the annual "Come and Take It" celebration - the Come and Take It Art Show.
